The control of diabetes is essential to avoid complications that can be serious. There are different types of diabetes. If you suffer from this disease, in this series of articles you will find a brief description of the different types of diabetes, and their treatment.
In the first part I described the type 1 diabetes that was previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. Now let’s describe type 2 diabetes. In all cases, the important thing is to keep the blood sugar level as close to normal as possible.
Type 2 diabetes
Treatment: People who suffer from it either do not produce enough insulin or have become resistant to the insulin they produce, which causes their blood sugar levels to rise above normal. Unlike patients with type 1 diabetes, which tend to be thin, patients with type 2 diabetes tend to be overweight or obese.
The goal of treatment if you have type 2 diabetes is also to control glucose levels as close to normal as possible to prevent long-term complications. The treatment includes:
Diet and exercise: Unlike patients with type 1 diabetes, if you have type 2 diabetes your body continues to produce insulin. That is why the main thing for which the controls consist of a proper diet and regular physical activity. Many times this can restore the body’s ability to process glucose and maintain it at normal levels. The recommendations regarding exercise and diet are the same as those for type 1 diabetics. Except that if you are overweight perhaps the time you need to devote to physical activity and the amount of calories and / or portions will vary.
Getting to a healthy weight and maintaining it is very important. Again, the advice of your doctor and a certified dietitian is key. Finally, if you are obese and have a BMI (body mass index of 30% or more) and have tried to lose weight with diet and exercise and have not achieved it, maybe bariatric surgery could be an option for you. Talk to your doctor about it.
Medications : Unlike type 1 diabetes, in type 2 diabetes, when diet and exercise are not enough to control blood glucose levels, your doctor will recommend one or more medications taken orally (taken). Only when type 2 diabetes is very advanced and the pancreas does not produce much insulin and / or does not respond to medications is it necessary to add insulin to the treatment . Unlike type 1 diabetes, if you use insulin and lose a lot of weight, you can often stop needing it. Your doctor may, as in type 1 diabetes, prescribe medication to prevent complications or hypertension , cholesterol or triglycerides high Do not stop taking them even though you feel good and go to your controls regularly .
The three types of diabetes can be controlled, as long as you follow your doctor’s instructions to the letter. It is important that you take your diet correctly (and remember that it does not have to be dull), and that you try to do the exercise necessary to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Do not stop taking medications or using insulin (if your doctor tells you) even if you feel good. Diabetes is a dangerous disease if you do not control it. But, fortunately, if you control it, you can prevent or delay complications and you can have a long and happy life.
